3 Attributes You Need To Succeed In Job Applications And Interviews

April 5, 2022

A good CV, soft skills and an ability to remain calm under pressure are attributes often described as beneficial to those applying for a dream role.

However, a glamorous CV and knowing just what to say aren’t everything. Beyond these requirements, what other abilities and skills can you employ to land that next big role?

 Attention to detail

This goes without saying. Any employer wants to feel they’ve scored big when they get talking with you, so do everything you can to showcase your ability and talent.

A great way of showing how seriously you take the opportunity is to scrutinise every line and facet of the job ad and spit it back at your interviewer.

Take the time to drill down into the details, it isn’t just a way of showing off; once you get a few questions answered you will get a handle on whether the job will be a good fit.

Likeability

Often glossed over, likeability is nonetheless extremely important. It doesn’t matter how well you do your job, if you aren’t likeable no one will want to hire you.

Sometimes likeability isn’t something you can control, no matter how much you practise your soft skills, if an employer is really looking for a cultural fit you may be at a disadvantage.

However, that doesn’t mean you should lie or pretend to fit in, you want last in the long term. Instead, be open about who you are and what you value, so you can find an opportunity both you and your employer like.

Sometimes likeability can just come to down to a lack of certain soft skills, so be sure to study up if that is you!

Drive

Determination is a key ingredient in the recipe of success. It is easy to just sit back and let the opportunities roll in, but think how much faster and higher you could climb with some dogged determination.

If you can stay focussed and proactive, you will have a wider range of options and thus a better chance of finding your perfect opportunity.

A proactive candidate will find their next opportunity faster than the reactive candidate, so keep that motivation high. You will need it; both to keep looking and applying, but also to handle any defeats or setbacks along the way.
