If you’ve been in the same role for years, feeling unmotivated and unchallenged, it might be time to consider your options. Of course, it’s normal for our goals, motivations and interests to change over time, but does that mean it’s time to start looking for a new job?
We’ve put together this article to highlight the top five signs it’s time to tidy up your CV and change jobs.
1. You no longer feel aligned with the businesses goals
When you were a fresh new starter, you may have been proud to associate yourself with the brand, its ethos and its goals. But over time, workplaces change, and you may not feel it’s the same great workplace it was five years ago.
Many things trigger these feelings. It could have been a management restructure or a change in how the business operates that you don’t feel comfortable with. If you no longer share the business’s values, they might no longer be a good fit for you.
2. You’ve outgrown your role
When you first landed your role, it was exciting, and every day felt like a new challenge. However, as you’ve developed professionally over the years, you may now feel the role is no longer for you, and you are ready for bigger and better things.
Some organisations simply will not have the means to offer you the career development you deserve. No matter how much you love the organisation and your colleagues, there comes a point where you need to prioritise your development, even if that means looking outside the organisation.
3. You spend the day clock watching
Do you remember when you would want to get to work early, and stay late to finish a project just because you felt motivated to? If those days are long gone, and you now find yourself counting the minutes until lunchtime and then counting down your afternoon stint with your hand on your bag at 4.59, waiting for 5 pm, it’s not a good sign.
You deserve to feel excited about going to work, and it may be time to find a role that relights your passion for work.
4. You feel overlooked and unappreciated
Do you feel you’ve been overlooked for promotion one too many times? Motivation can fade quickly if you never feel appreciated or valued as a team member. Everyone wants to feel their work is worthwhile and valued as a team member. Unfortunately, a 2022 study showed that 59% of employees feel they have never had a boss that really appreciates them.
You spend the majority of your week working with the same people. Feeling part of a friendly and supportive unit that appreciates your work is important. If that’s not the case, it might be time to reconsider your career options.
5. You always feel stressed and irritable
If you regularly feel snappy and irritable at work, it can be a sure sign that you are unhappy in your current role. Feeling stressed and moody can be an early warning sign that something isn’t quite right. Stress affects your mood and motivation and can impact your work performance and your physical health.
If you have bouts of feeling low or irritable at work, it is essential to take a moment to reflect on your current situation and consider if you need to make a change.
If any of the above sounds familiar to you, and you’ve already asked yourself if it is time to change your job, there’s a good chance the answer is yes.
