New Job In January? How To Job Seach In December, January & Beyond

December 6, 2019

Looking for a new job in 2020?

Only a fool would wait until the New Year to start searching! OK, we’re being dramatic, but with a bit of forward-planning, you can beat the New Year rush and put yourself on the right course to secure the role you deserve.

So take it from all of us at Pentasia, with our many years’ experience in the cyclical nature of recruitment budgets and hiring plans. Here’s our guide to what you should be doing, and when.

(Already applying? Check out our interview tips here)
Early December: Now’s the time for a bit of planning and networking. Pre-Christmas is the perfect opportunity to reconnect with old colleagues and industry contacts over some Christmas drinks to explore your ideas. It’s also a good time to update your CV, reflecting on what you’ve achieved in the year. Employers will be planning too, often allocating their annual budgets: you need to be able to move fast when you see your dream role advertised!
Late December: It’s a common misconception that companies aren’t hiring in December. In fact, that’s not the case. Many companies will have already put their job ads up for roles in the January budget, meaning that now could be the perfect time to apply. You may well find that recruiters and hirers have less candidates applying around this time, so you can stand out and get in there early. Plus, it’s a great time to start interviewing – after all, everyone’s in a good mood because it’s Christmas.
Over the Holidays: It’s important to switch off from work, so use this time to relax and catch up with loved ones. But if you do find yourself bored and in a food and/or wine coma, then it can be a great time for some light research into your target companies, or browsing of job ads - either to apply now or save for later. This time can also be great for self-reflection on your career path. Check in with yourself; where do you want your career to go in 2020 (and beyond?). Talk it through with your family and friends to get another opinion.
In the New Year: Now to ramp things up a gear. Maybe you’ve done some initial research, spoken to some headhunters in your industry, and applied to a few jobs. Now it’s about volume. Lots of companies will be on a hiring drive around this time, but it’s also a popular time for people wanting to switch jobs, so you need to stand out. Actively apply, focus on key companies and positions, but don’t be afraid to put yourself forward to a few ‘out of the box’ positions. The worst that can happen is you’ll be able to hone your interviewing skills.
January, February, March… Job hunting can take time, especially if you’re looking for the right role and not just anything that’s available. So be patient and play the long game. If you’re not getting as many interviews as you’d like, re-review your CV: is it selling you in the best way? Reassess the positions you’re applying to – are they the right level? Try working with a recruiter to present you to their clients in the best light. Be patient, adapt your approach and you will see the results, we promise.
