Five Great Questions To Ask A Hiring Manager To Impress Them

November 30, 2022

First impressions count, and when you are interviewing for a new position, you want to make sure you stand out from the crowd.

It’s important to prepare some example answers to a range of interview questions and do some background research on the company before stepping into the interview room, but have you considered what questions you will ask the hiring manager before the interview draws to a close?

Asking questions shows enthusiasm and helps you and your prospective employer learn more about each other. This article will cover some of the best interview questions you can ask a hiring manager to impress them at your next interview.

What questions to ask a hiring manager?

Interviews are not just for the company to find out if you are a good fit for them. It’s also an opportunity for the candidate to discover as much about the business as possible to assess if it is also a good fit for them personally and professionally.

What you ask the hiring manager tells them a lot about your character and priorities. We would never recommend jumping in and asking questions about salary and benefits first. If you are successful, this will always come later. A good tip is to ask questions that show you want to learn more about the company, the role and their values.

To help you get started, here are 5 of the best interview questions sure to impress a hiring manager at your following interview:

1. How would you describe the company culture?

If you are going to spend 40 hours a week working together, you’ll want to find a job role that matches your work ethic and personality. Asking this will give you an idea of how the teams work together, whether they are a sociable team and hopefully give you an insight as to whether this is the right place for you.

2. Can you tell me about the history of this role?

The purpose of this question is to find out if this is a new role or a pre-existing one and what career progression options are for those who have previously carried out the same role. For example, how long they held the position, whether they progressed internally or moved on to an opportunity elsewhere.

3. How does the role fit in with the overall structure of the company?

This will give you an idea of where the department you are interviewing for sits in the grand scheme of things within the organisation. It will also highlight if career progression is possible with this role.

4. What are your expectations around workflow management?

In some roles, it’s expected that employees be available off the clock to take phone calls or work overtime in the office or at home regularly. Understanding if this is the case will allow you to consider how these working conditions will impact the rest of your life and if it’s the type of work ethic you are comfortable with.

5. What do you like about working here?

Hiring managers can pitch a job all day long, but it’s always interesting to hear why they enjoy being part of the organisation. It also shows that you are showing an interest in what it is like to be a team member, and that you are interested in the workplace culture - not just the job in question.

Asking interview questions shows you are interested in a company beyond the job role you applied for and want to learn about organisational structure, work ethics and how you would fit into the bigger picture. When done right, your questions can leave a lasting impression on the hiring manager and lead to a job offer or second interview.
