My client is a B2B company that prides itself on thinking B2C. The company’s mission is to develop into the leading mainstream sports betting provider with a reputation for building high quality, bespoke and innovative products.

In order to help them complete that mission they are seeking a dynamic and well qualified Head of Development to provide leadership to the technology team and guidance to all developer roles, ensuring efficient execution against the agreed product roadmap. This role works closely with the Product Management team to execute each feature that makes up the roadmap, providing technical recommendations to ensure that my client delivers a high-quality, market-leading sportsbook solution.


Scope of the Role:

Reporting to the CTO, you will build and support high performance and innovative sports betting technology for worldwide gaming companies.

This challenging position requires both a leader and a self-starter who quickly understands business needs and implements innovative solutions with critical requirements on capacity and quality. It will be important to effectively combine the needs of multiple projects, meet aggressive deadlines, and to thrive in a dynamic environment. This is a high-profile position guiding great teams with many challenges, opportunities and rewards in an internationally growing organisation.

These global teams develop server, back-office administration, and front-end client software for a regulated, J2EE based, online sports betting platform. The software handles thousands of bets and settlements per second across a vast number of markets and bet types. The technology stack is constantly evolving, but is currently based on Java, Wildfly, JSF, MySQL, HTML5, Javascript and Angular.

Key Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Be the centre of software development excellence for the business
  • Management of resources: appropriately staffing, mentoring, growing and maintaining skilled engineering teams
  • Manage the day-to-day activities of the technology division within an Agile/Scrum environment
  • Ensure development teams have everything they need to efficiently execute the product backlogs
  • Maintain, enforce and recommend SDLC processes and best practices
  • Work with developers and product team to produce accurate development estimates
  • Manage and execute against project plans and delivery commitments
  • Report on status of development to executive management
  • Certify that technical design & reviews, coding standards, development, unit tests, integration tests, and code reviews are executed
  • Understand the balance between architectural purity and delivery. Make solid decisions that drive high quality delivery within an estimated time-frame. Work closely with the engineers to architect and develop best technical designs and approaches
  • Hold regular 121 with team members. Coach and grow individuals to help them reach their full potential.
  • Set key performance objectives, review and give formal and informal feedback to individuals
  • Evaluate and identify appropriate roles for all direct reports
  • Identify resourcing gaps and make corrections when necessary
  • Work with technical leads to establish & maintain the technology vision for the product.
  • Pragmatically guide and motivate development teams to delivery goals.

Skills & Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or similar. Masters is a plus.
  • Understanding of design for scalability, performance and reliability and trade-offs therein
  • A track record of on-time, high quality, complex software delivery
  • Experience leading professional teams and following/improving software development methodologies to ensure smooth and visible software delivery
  • Be able to manage global resources and teams working in various technologies while keeping communication levels high and strategy clear
  • Must have a head for process, standards and procedure
  • Ability to handle multiple work streams at once
  • Understand when to delegate responsibility and when to take ownership directly
  • Be grounded in Agile development methodologies
  • Be able to manage ambiguity and changing directions
  • Excellent organizational skills and the charisma to galvanize and rally teams to deliver on aggressive delivery schedules.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills with internal and external stakeholders; comprehensive report-writing skills, ability to translate complex technical information to layman’s terms and provide clear direction on initiatives and strategies
  • Be able to see and communicate the big picture, and to pre-empt problems by jumping in and making corrections
  • Experience in leading teams to solve complex issues. Able to step back and analyse, guiding teams get to the root cause, and to develop the most elegant solutions
  • Setting and reviewing performance expectations and personal development plans to ensure high quality and aligned group behaviours
  • Keep an eye on the future of the product and on new technologies. Be able to make strategic technology recommendations to the executive team to ensure that my client’s sportsbook product remains technologically robust
  • Experience in a regulated sports betting or gaming environment is a plus
