The Fifa World Cup 2014 has officially arrived. We mark the moment by reflecting on the latest footie-related iGaming stories from this week.
Online gaming companies in particular have been readily prepared with tactical marketing campaigns promoting their brands. Their advertising strategies can be effective and sometimes shocking or controversial. But it is always interesting to see what operators are doing to increase their brand awareness and get players on board. Here are just a couple of the marketing stunts we stumbled upon this week…
SportsBet's 'Christ the Redeemer' statue
Betting firm Sportsbet has come under some scrutiny this week after creating a huge inflatable version of Brazil’s Christ the Redeemer statue, to float over the city of Melbourne. The blown-up statue has the company’s name clearly adervetised, along with a hashtag of KEEPTHEFAITH. Although this may offend some religious communities, the ploy has certainly caused a stir and created an impact on the press. Of course, you can decide whether this was a step too far or a clever way of getting noticed.
Paddy Power's rainforest image hoax
Paddy Power are pretty well known for their quirky campaigns and at times sparking a bit of controversy. The Irish bookmaker have now revealed that their recent campaign for the 2014 Fifa World Cup was actually just a hoax. This was probably good news for many as they had lead people to believe that part of the Amazonian rainforest had been ripped down in order to send an encouraging message to the England national team. The words ‘C’mon England PP’ were created through the apparent destruction of the rainforest, causing a backlash on social media networks. Paddy Power certainly know how to make an impact with their marketing strategies so it wouldn’t have come as much of a surprise to the bookmakers that they had once again caused a stir.
We are sure there will be plenty more eye-catching campaigns from many iGaming operators coming up in the next few weeks.
