Our VP Recruiter for North America, Marwa Mitchell speaks to us about her background in recruitment and experience of the US iGaming industry. Marwa also lends some helpful advice for people looking to get into iGaming and shares what she looks for in our candidates.

Q: What do you like about your job?

A:One of the best parts of my job is getting the opportunity to solve problems in such a fast paced environment. I find that with any challenges come great highs! Some of those challenges have come from making myself disciplined enough to build a business from the ground up, something which has given me the success I have had so far today in my career. There are always great rewards to be had from working hard, most of which include breaking new accounts and finding amazing candidates for my roles! However I truly can say that the most satisfying part of my job is moving people forward and helping them develop in their careers.

Q: What is your background in recruitment?

A: Prior to working in recruitment, I started off my career in the Software Development space as a Business Analyst and Project Manager. I have now been working as a recruiter for about 8 years but feel that my previous experience has really carried over to the job I do now. As a Business Analyst I had to be a good listener and as a Project Manager I learned to be organized and deadline driven. Luckily these skills translate very well into the recruitment business; it’s just the products that differ. Recruiting in the iGaming world specifically feels more unique than working in general IT. I like the entrepreneurial spirit in this space and the fact that CEOs in iGaming are just as accessible as Customer Service Reps. You don’t find that in other industries.

Q: How long have you been working in iGaming?

A: I have been working in iGaming from May 2012 since I started working at Pentasia. I had supported the land-based side of gaming previously but it was working at Pentasia that really introduced me to the iGaming industry. The industry attracted me because of its newness to North America. It feels exciting because there is so much potential for the sector to develop here.

Q: What is your specialism?

A: It would be great if we could work with every gaming product but at the moment it is not possible. Only Poker is legal in Nevada right now but fortunately it looks like Casino and Poker are soon to be legalized in New Jersey, with Delaware not far behind.

We work with land based operators looking to go online, European operators wanting to partner with land based operators, and vendors of both. We are also fortunate enough to work with social games companies, Tier one land based operators, Tier one European operators and Payments vendors. In terms of roles that we recruit for, we are currently focusing on finding Head of Interactive candidates and building marketing teams (Acquisitions and CRM) for our clients.

Q: What do you look for in your candidates?

A: I look for candidates with clear verbal communication skills as I want to find out about their strengths, backed up with real-life examples. It’s important because the candidates who know themselves, know what they are good at and why, perform better in client interviews.  If I receive vague responses when speaking to a candidate as a recruiter, I can pretty sure the client will see through it immediately as well. Also, remember enthusiasm doesn’t hurt either!

Q: And finally, Marwa do you ever gamble?

A: Not really, I'd only end up buying a new pair of shoes!
